Ιn 2018, at Paros Park, we started a pilot construction of small and low rock dams, aiming at maximum absorption of rain water and at the prevention of soil erosion. The success of these works undertaken by the Friends of the Park Association with the financial support of Paros Park SA and the scientific guidance of Elena Symeonidou, now allows us to apply these non-invasive and low-cost techniques against desertification on a larger scale.
For 2019, we have a new ally to fund part of our actions: the Cycladic Conservation Fund, founded in 2017, to support sustainable environmental initiatives and to highlight the value of the natural environment of the Cyclades.
With the help of the CPF in 2019, we will also start building a Botanical Garden in the Park, with the ambition to gradually gather a large number of native plants of Paros, those that are abundant but also those rarely found. The residents, students and visitors of Paros will be able to explore the garden and get a taste of the rich flora of the island as well as information on the presence and use of plants in the Cyclades throughout the centuries.
We thank the local organisations that support our efforts: Naias Naval Club, Association of Agricultural Cooperatives, Forestry Nursery and Greenery Department of Paros Municipality.
We thank the Cycladic Preservation Fund for its support to organisations that protect the natural heritage of the Cyclades and for the recognition of Paros Park as an ecological refuge and a model of sustainable tourist development. We are ready to contribute to the Fund’s effort to spread those practices that effectively protect the fragile and rare ecosystems of the Cycladic islands in which we have the great fortune to live.
