Traditional Music of the Aegean Sea. Featuring the instruments of the Aegean: Violin, Santour and Lute.
The ensemble’s distinctive “sound” is shaped by the choice of instruments and the repertoire featuring music of the Aegean Sea and the coast of Asia Minor. The use of old playing techniques creates a special atmosphere.
“Ballos” is a music group that debuted in the Greek music stage in early 2002. Each of its members carries separate past experience and has been influenced by different aspects of Greek and East Mediterranean music, participating in various musical formations and cooperating with Greek and international composers. Gradually, they proceeded to producing personal compositions, many of which have been published in records.
The musical instruments used by the group, which depict the group’s character, are the violin, the lute and the zither. These are used to perform both traditional and modern music, depending on the performance requirements.
The group “handpicks” the songs and music they play – mainly from the Greek islands and Asia Minor – using the strictest criteria. This fact, along with the members’ studies in Byzantine, European and Greek traditional music and their involvement in Greek discography – either as composers or as performers, have defined the path of the group.
The novelty introduced by “Vorriades” is the choice of musical instruments and the old fashioned style of performance – which is rare nowadays that the original character of tradition has been lost. This combination of parameters and the encounter of three different but equally powerful musical personalities constitute a true innovation.
